British Prime Minister Andy Burnham reportedly exchanged a few messages with someone posing as White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, only to cut off contact after growing suspicious. The incident has drawn attention to the growing threat of AI-driven impersonation of senior government officials.
Burnham Suspends Contact After Growing Doubts
According to a report by Politico, Burnham believed he was communicating with Wiles but eventually became suspicious of the exchange. He then severed the communications and alerted the relevant authorities to the suspicious activity.
A British government spokesperson declined to comment on the matter, stating that it is against policy to discuss national security matters. The contents of the messages between Burnham and the imposter remain unclear to this day.
US Authorities Launch Investigations Into AI Imposters
The FBI warned of malicious actors misusing AI to impersonate senior government officials and launched an investigation alongside the White House into an imposter who posed as Wiles. The State Department also announced it was investigating an imposter who pretended to be Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The British Embassy in the US was reportedly extremely concerned about the incident and informed the White House, which confirmed the incident had nothing to do with the Chief of Staff's devices being hacked. Concern over communications security has risen during President Donald Trump's second term.
Broader Pattern of AI Impersonation Threatens Security
The Trump administration faced intense scrutiny in March last year after a US journalist was added to a group chat on the Signal app where top security officials discussed military strikes on the Houthis in Yemen. A Pentagon report published in December concluded that Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth could have endangered US soldiers after sharing secret information in the chat.
These incidents highlight the growing risk of AI being used to impersonate senior government officials and compromise sensitive communications. US authorities have warned in recent months about the dangers of such technology being exploited for malicious purposes.
