The UN chief on Tuesday condemned a devastating airstrike on a Myanmar market that killed at least 50 people, while Malaysia launched deportations of thousands of nationals and the UN released emergency funds to combat El Niño-driven droughts across Africa.
Deadly Airstrike in Myanmar's Rakhine State
Forces from Myanmar's military junta struck Kyauktaw township around midday on Monday, hitting a market with more than 200 shops bustling with vendors and customers. The attack reportedly killed at least 50 people and injured at least 58, many critically, with women and children among the dead.
UN human rights chief Volker Türk described Myanmar as a country 'wracked by extreme violence' and said the strike raised serious concerns about respect for international humanitarian law. He highlighted abuses against the Rohingya by both the army and the opposition Arakan Army armed group.
Malaysia Departs Myanmar Nationals Amid UN Warnings
Malaysia began implementing a plan to deport some 5,000 Myanmar nationals following a reported agreement with the country's military rulers, which Kuala Lumpur said would involve only voluntary repatriations. However, the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, says it has not been involved in identifying those being returned, who have reportedly been held in detention centres.
UN human rights chief Volker Türk urged authorities to halt the process immediately, warning that conditions in Myanmar are 'far from safe and sustainable'. UNHCR stressed that no one should be sent back to a place where they risk persecution or torture, noting that continuing violence in Rakhine shows conditions do not exist for safe, voluntary returns.
Emergency Drought Funding Released for Africa
UN relief chief Tom Fletcher released millions of dollars from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to address El Niño-driven drought in South Sudan, Zimbabwe and Chad. In South Sudan, $6 million will support early action on a worsening drought affecting more than 10 million people, while $4 million will be used for anticipatory action in Zimbabwe.
In Chad, $3.6 million will help 350,000 people prepare for dry conditions that could worsen food insecurity. The CERF funds were released automatically once trigger thresholds were met, bringing anticipatory action funding for the drought in seven different regions of Chad to $8 million since the start of the year.
