King Mohammed VI has appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as Morocco's first woman prime minister, following her party's victory in last week's parliamentary elections. The 50-year-old, who also served as housing minister and mayor of Marrakesh, was tasked with forming a new government on Tuesday.
A Historic Appointment
El Mansouri, born in Marrakesh in 1976, is the second woman to serve as prime minister in the Arab world, after Najla Bouden of Tunisia. She studied law at the University of Montpellier in France and earned a diploma in Anglo-Saxon business law from New York University.
She said: 'For the first time in our country's history, a woman is taking on the responsibility of leading the government. This is a source of pride not only for me but for all Moroccan women.' She also described the moment as 'truly historic.'
Election Results and Coalition Challenges
Her party, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), won 97 out of 395 seats in the House of Representatives, 31 more than the next closest competitor. However, the election saw the lowest turnout in two decades, and PAM fell short of the 198 seats needed for an outright majority.
The PJD, which won 54 seats, made significant gains after securing just 13 seats in 2021. Its chief, former prime minister Abdelilah Benkirane, ruled out joining a coalition led by PAM, calling it 'tainted by fraud.'
Key Priorities for the New Government
El Mansouri's government will face pressing issues including unemployment, rising living costs, and persistent social disparities affecting young people. She pledged to restore hope through concrete solutions rather than empty rhetoric.
Her administration is also expected to oversee billions of dollars in investments linked to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. PAM has pledged average annual economic growth of five percent and the creation of at least one million new jobs over its five-year term.
