According to the Whois domain owner registry, the domain dot.com was transferred in July. The site now redirects users to the download page for xAI's Grok chatbot application.
It is possible that xAI acquired the domain for standard domain-buying reasons, such as capturing mistyped searches where users might type dot instead of bot. xAI has not publicly confirmed the motive behind the purchase.
The Internet's Reaction
Anonymous X user and xAI watcher @birdabo, who describes themselves as the chief shitposting officer at SpaceXAI, was the first to spot the domain connection in a now-viral post.
The internet's theory is that Musk or his team pulled off a prank by getting wind of OpenAI's new product name and buying the domain in response. The situation has become a source of amusement online.
Other Domain Possibilities
xAI does not own the bot.com name, nor does it own other obvious typo domains like vot.com, which is currently listed for sale. This limits the scope of any potential domain-related strategy.
The dots.com domain, which more directly matches the product name, currently belongs to a long-defunct company. If a prank was the motivation, acquiring that domain would represent a more direct and elaborate move.
