Tokar's Diplomatic Background

Yurii Tokar, 49, has built a distinguished career in Ukrainian diplomacy across several continents. Before his current role in Nairobi, he served as Ukraine's chargé d'affaires at the embassy in Washington between 2014 and 2019, and later as the country's chargé d'affaires in Wrocław, Poland, from 2022 to 2025.

He assumed the ambassadorship to Kenya in July 2025 and was also appointed as Ukraine's ambassador to the Comoros in July 2026, holding both positions concurrently. His appointment to Somalia marks another expansion of Ukraine's diplomatic footprint in East Africa.

Ukraine-Somalia Diplomatic Ties

Ukraine formally established diplomatic relations with Somalia in April 2025. At the time, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Kyiv was evaluating Somalia's support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, reflecting the growing strategic partnership between the two nations.

Prior to this appointment, the protection of Ukrainian citizens' rights and interests in Somalia was managed by the embassy in Nairobi. The new ambassadorship is expected to strengthen bilateral cooperation and deepen engagement across political, economic, and humanitarian spheres.

Humanitarian Engagement in the Region

Ukraine has also demonstrated its commitment to humanitarian aid in the Horn of Africa. In September 2022, the country allocated 50,000 tons of humanitarian aid through Ethiopia and Somalia, underscoring its broader involvement in regional stability and crisis response efforts.

This aid initiative highlights Ukraine's willingness to contribute to humanitarian causes even amid its own ongoing conflict, reinforcing its image as a nation engaged in both diplomacy and humanitarianism across the continent.
