Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has convened the inaugural meeting of Somalia's National Disaster Risk Management Committee, with the session focused on the nation's ongoing drought and the looming threat of severe flooding as the Deyr rains approach.
Committee Launches with Drought and Flood Focus
The Federal Government of Somalia held its first-ever National Disaster Risk Management Committee meeting, chaired by Prime Minister H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre. The gathering centred on reviewing the country's persistent drought conditions and the growing anxiety surrounding potential severe flooding as the Deyr rains are expected to begin in parts of the nation.
During the session, the committee presented updates on disaster preparedness, emergency response plans and public awareness campaigns targeting communities in low-lying and flood-prone areas across the country.
PM Issues Directives on Flood Awareness and Emergency Response
PM Hamza directed the committee to intensify public awareness on flood risks, particularly for communities living near rivers and waterways, while strengthening emergency response and coordinating relief efforts to protect vulnerable populations.
The Prime Minister also instructed the committee to strengthen coordination of humanitarian response efforts, mobilise donors and Somali businesses, and support communities affected by drought and recurrent flooding.
Mobilising Resources for Humanitarian Support
The committee's mandate now includes a coordinated push to bring together international donors and local Somali enterprises to fund relief operations for those hit hardest by the dual challenges of drought and flooding.
As the Deyr season approaches, the government is positioning itself to manage the transition from drought relief to flood preparedness, ensuring that communities in at-risk zones receive timely warnings and support.
