A 33-year-old goat herder from Cheporor, western Kenya, accidentally discovered a three-gram gold nugget while searching for a missing goat, sparking a gold rush that drew up to 10,000 prospectors to the remote village.
The Discovery That Changed a Village
Manasse Lomachar sold his three-gram gold nugget for 36,000 Kenyan shillings ($280), a sum that transformed his life and drew thousands of hopeful miners to Cheporor. Local authorities estimate that about 10,000 people arrived at the height of the rush, turning the once-quiet bushland into a landscape of pits and makeshift camps.
Samuel Kiarie, the deputy commissioner of West Pokot county, says the rush began after two notable discoveries: young men found a substantial amount of gold, and the following day, women made another significant find in the same area. The uncovering of larger quantities at the beginning of August is what caught the attention of many people.
Challenges Amid the Gold Rush
Since the initial rush, the number of prospectors has gone down to around 2,500 as some have given up the search. Small-scale gold traders told authorities they received an average of about 100 people every day, while individual discoveries reportedly range from amounts worth a few hundred Kenyan shillings to one find valued at approximately 78,000 shillings ($600).
The area lacks clean water, piped water, and has limited sanitation, prompting public health officials to monitor conditions and prevent disease outbreaks. Authorities have also increased security patrols amid concerns over sexual violence and the vulnerability of women and girls at the site.
Hope and Hardship for Miners
Mugisha Godfrey, an artisanal miner from Busia in eastern Uganda, travelled to Cheporor after hearing about the discovery from a friend, spending about 100,000 Ugandan shillings ($27) to get there. Eighteen-year-old Abigael Chelengat arrived from a nearby district, hoping to find enough gold to pay her school fees and help keep her younger siblings in school.
Manasse Lomachar wants the government to help local miners establish safer and more effective ways of finding and extracting the gold, including providing metal detectors. He points to the homes nearby as evidence of the area's poverty, noting that most are just thatched houses.
