Somalia's Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali received copies of the Letters of Credence of Algeria's new ambassador, Mohamed Alim, marking the first formal step in re-establishing a diplomatic relationship that had been dormant since 1985.
Ambassador Arrives and Credentials Received
Ambassador Mohamed Alim arrived in Mogadishu last week and was welcomed at Aden Adde International Airport by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hamse Adan Hadow. The reception was attended by Arab ambassadors serving in the capital, a representative of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and Somalia's own Ambassador to Algeria, Yusuf Ahmed Hassan, known as Yusuf Jeego.
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali received copies of the ambassador's Letters of Credence. The minister said the Federal Government is committed to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries, naming political, economic, security and cultural cooperation as the areas in which it intends to do so.
A Historic Reopening of Ties
The arrival of Ambassador Alim precedes the reopening of an Algerian embassy that last operated in Somalia in 1985. This move completes an exchange that began on the Somali side, when Somalia reopened its own embassy in Algiers in January 2025.
In August 2025, the Foreign Minister inaugurated new premises for the Somali mission in Algiers together with Algeria's Secretary of State for African Affairs, Salma Bakhita Mansouri. The reopening of the Algerian mission in Mogadishu signals a significant restoration of diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
Broader Strategic Context
Algeria is among the larger members of both the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and holds a long established position in African diplomacy. It also has its own extended experience of counterterrorism operations in the Sahel, each of which touches a file Somalia is currently working on.
What has been established so far is narrower: an ambassador has arrived, the Ministry has received his credentials in copy, and a mission that has been closed for four decades is being reconstituted. The substance of the cooperation the minister described will depend on what the two governments do once the embassy is open and functioning, and none of that has been announced.
