Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic dissolved parliament and ordered snap elections on October 25, citing nearly two years of mass protests over corruption and the Novi Sad railway station collapse that killed 16 people.
Vucic Dissolves Parliament and Sets Election Date
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic signed an order on Wednesday dissolving parliament and calling for early parliamentary elections on October 25. In a televised address, he acknowledged the country has experienced huge turbulences and said he believes the elections will help Serbia finally emerge from the crisis.
The snap elections were originally scheduled for December 2027, but Vucic moved the date forward in response to sustained public unrest. He stated that election results must clearly show the will of the people and the direction in which Serbia is heading.
Protests Sparked by Railway Station Collapse and Corruption Allegations
Since November 2024, student-led protests have demanded Vucic step down, alleging corruption and authoritarianism. The demonstrations emerged after the collapse of a railway station in Novi Sad, which left at least 16 people dead, with protesters claiming shoddy construction work resulted from corruption.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been protesting for nearly two years, accusing the president and his right-wing Serbian Progressive Party of ties with organized crime and of slowing Serbia's EU accession bid. Hundreds have been detained while participating in demonstrations.
Vucic Denies Accusations and Plans to Run for Prime Minister
Vucic, who has close ties with Russia and China, has denied the accusations against his government and blamed the protestors for attempting to destroy the state. He is not allowed to run for another presidential term but has said he plans to run for prime minister instead.
Vucic has held power as both president and prime minister for more than a decade and still commands the support of his party. He is expected to announce his resignation from the presidency in the coming days and begin his campaign for the parliamentary vote.
