Somalia's Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education has opened its 12th consecutive national Grade 12 examinations across 158 centres in 58 districts, with 44,136 students sitting the exam — the largest cohort ever recorded since the test was introduced in 2015.
Record Participation and Nationwide Coverage
The 2025/2026 national examinations, administered by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education, saw 44,136 students from across the country — excluding Puntland and Somaliland — take their seats in 158 examination centres spanning 58 districts. This marks the largest number of candidates ever to sit the national exam since its inception in 2015, reflecting growing confidence in the system's fairness and reach.
Students entered the examination without wearing school uniforms due to security concerns, and emergency ambulances were stationed at each venue to ensure safety. Despite these precautions, some students still chose to abstain from the exam out of fear, intimidation, or a belief that the national test was not important to their future prospects.
From Fear to Confidence: A Decade of Transformation
The examination journey has evolved through three distinct phases: initial fear and intimidation, a period of public awareness and accountability, and finally, a stage of growth and institutional maturity. In 2016, only 11,574 students sat the exam, with 19,104 passing — a figure that has since grown steadily, reaching 32,714 passers in 2025.
During the early years, the Ministry faced challenges including exam fraud and public distrust. In one notable incident, the then-Minister of Education, Abdullahi Goodax Barre, decided to cancel an ongoing exam session due to widespread irregularities. Over time, the Ministry has taken full control of all exam operations — from printing to invigilation — ensuring integrity and building public trust in the results.
Banaadir Dominates Rankings as System Matures
Banaadir has consistently topped the national rankings in most years, with the exception of 2021 when Galmudug claimed first place, and 2023 when Jubaland emerged as the top performer. In 2025, Banaadir once again led the standings, with female students achieving the highest individual score — a shift from previous years where male students held the top position.
Critics have pointed to social media distractions, particularly TikTok, as a factor contributing to lower performance among Banaadir students. Meanwhile, officials in other regions have argued that students outside the capital enjoy better preparation opportunities. The Ministry now aims to use the national exam as a reliable benchmark to measure the quality of education and the knowledge of Somalia's new generation.
