Tropical Storm Moke is advancing toward Hawaii with heavy rain and strong winds, arriving just a week after Hurricane Lala left the islands battered by flooding and power outages. Residents are being urged to prepare as the storm is expected to pass south of the Big Island overnight.
Storm Position and Movement
As of 11am Hawaii Standard Time, Tropical Storm Moke was located approximately 684 kilometres south of Hilo on Hawaii Island. The system is moving west-northwest at 19km/h, with maximum sustained winds of about 85km/h reported by the National Hurricane Center.
Moke is forecast to pass south of Hawaii Island overnight and into the following morning, sparing the Big Island a potentially disastrous direct hit. After passing the island, the storm is projected to continue on a westward path near the islands through early Tuesday.
Rainfall and Wind Forecasts
The National Hurricane Center projects that Moke will bring roughly 130mm to 250mm of rainfall over the next two days on the southeast and windward sides of the Big Island, with some isolated areas seeing up to 380mm. Eastern Maui is likely to receive between 76mm and 150mm of rain.
Impacts will be especially felt on the windward and southeast sides of the Big Island, though they are expected to be more limited than those caused by Hurricane Lala. Governor Josh Green warned that the heavy rain is unlikely to end with Moke, as another storm front is expected about a week later.
Preparation and Recovery Efforts
Hawaii Governor Josh Green has urged residents to restock food, medicine and daily essentials ahead of Moke's arrival. He authorised 100 hotel rooms for people who may lack adequate services or protection, noting that the storm could have a big impact because the islands have already been hit hard.
Power had been restored to most of Hawaii Island after Hurricane Lala, but some remote areas were still experiencing outages, with full restoration expected by September 8. At least one person died in last weekend's storm, which dumped more than 1,000mm of rain and forced nearly 130,000 utility customers to lose power.
