Body camera footage and recovered text messages filed in court reveal federal immigration agents in Los Angeles using derogatory language to refer to Latinos during enforcement operations last summer.
Evidence of Derogatory Language in Court Filings
The ACLU of Southern California submitted blurred body camera recordings and forensically recovered text messages as part of a motion for a preliminary injunction. The materials were intended to challenge what the group describes as a pattern of race-based profiling by federal agents during immigration stops.
In one video, an agent can be heard saying, 'Yeah, just plug us in wherever you see some tonks and we'll jump out.' Another agent is heard saying, 'There was a guy, I'm pretty sure he's wet he was just sitting in that minivan,' using a term allegedly shortened from a slur targeting Latinos.
DHS Responds with Deflection
When asked by ABC News whether using racial slurs violates Department of Homeland Security policies, a DHS spokesperson did not respond directly. Instead, the spokesperson stated that 'our agents are focused on protecting the American people -- not entertaining performative outrage.'
The spokesperson also asked, 'Where is the media's outrage for Angel families who lost a loved one to illegal alien crime?' The ACLU filed the lawsuit last year on behalf of several individuals, including U.S. citizens, who were stopped, questioned, and in some cases detained by immigration agents in the Central District of California.
ACLU Condemns the Filings
Mayra Joachim, deputy director of immigrants' rights at ACLU SoCal, said of the new court documents, 'This filing should shock the conscience.' She added that evidence from the government has confirmed that immigration officers are flagrantly violating the law by detaining people without justification and often primarily because of the color of their skin.
In addition to body camera footage, ACLU attorneys filed copies of text message chains between agents. One agent asked, 'Some of these people are stupid. Why would you post on social media that you're wet,' while another added, 'Btw tonks everywhere selling food for the 4th festivities in long beach right now.'
