Visitors return to the historic room as the museum strengthens security and relocates treasures
The Louvre Museum reopened its Apollo Gallery to the public on Wednesday, the first access since October 2025. Robbers stole €88 million ($102 million) in crown jewels during a daytime heist. The Louvre is the world's most visited museum, with up to 9 million visitors yearly.
Details of the October 2025 Heist
The October 2025 heist occurred at 9:30 a.m., while the museum was still opening. Thieves used a crane mounted on a truck to enter through a window and were equipped with power tools such as a disc cutter to steal French crown jewels.
On their way out, the thieves dropped a 170-year-old crown made for Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie. The Louvre said it was 'badly deformed' but 'nearly intact' and could be restored, leaving it among items not taken from the gallery.
Gallery Reopens Without Treasures
The Apollo Gallery now returns to its 17th-century ceremonial purpose with no jewels on display. The public can view gilded ceilings and Greek frescoes. Director Christophe Leribault said former exhibits were relocated elsewhere in the museum.
The gallery is among the Louvre's most marvelous spaces, with ceilings by Charles Le Brun and later work by Eugene Delacroix. Leribault took over after Laurence des Cars resigned following the heist that exposed security failures at the museum.
Security Upgrades and Official Response
French Culture Minister Catherine Pegard called the heist a 'sinister day' and said it was 'a trauma for the entire world.' Authorities boosted security with new surveillance cameras and anti-intrusion systems across the museum.
These improvements form part of a decade-long modernization plan costing up to €800 million. The upgrades follow the theft that revealed vulnerabilities in one of the world's most renowned cultural institutions.
