Hurricane Lala weakened to a tropical storm Sunday after passing just west of Hawaii without making landfall, yet it delivered hurricane-force gusts, torrential rain and widespread power outages across the islands.
Storm Weakening and Position
Lala, which had been a hurricane, dropped to tropical storm status Sunday as it moved northwest at about 15 mph (24 kmh) with top winds of 70 mph (110 kph). As of 2 a.m. Sunday in Hawaii, the system was centered roughly 105 miles (170 km) west-northwest of Kailua-Kona and about 100 miles (160 km) south of Honolulu, with tropical-storm-force winds extending up to 175 miles (280 km) from its center.
Forecasters expect Lala to regain hurricane strength midweek once it is well west of the island chain. Tropical storm warnings remain in effect for Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Oahu, Kauai and Niihau as the storm continues its westward track.
Rainfall, Flooding and Power Losses
The storm dumped heavy rain across the islands, with the National Hurricane Center predicting 8 to 12 inches (20.3 to 30.5 cm) across Maui and the lower elevations of the Big Island, and 4 to 6 inches (10.2 to 15.2 cm) across the island chain. Some higher-altitude areas on the Big Island could receive as much as 35 inches (89 cm) of rain, turning rivers into raging torrents and threatening mudslides.
More than 130,000 households were without power Sunday morning across Hawaii's three largest islands, and at least three hospitals were operating on generator power, Governor Josh Green said. The National Hurricane Center warned that wind speeds atop mountains and on the windward and leeward slopes are often up to 30% stronger than the near-surface winds used to categorize storms.
Casualties, Damage and Rescue Efforts
At least one person died in a car accident in the South Point area of the Big Island, and 19 roofs were lost in the storm, the governor said Saturday evening. He added that crews had already responded to more than 30 sites impacted by road damage and flooding.
A search-and-rescue mission involving Civil Defense, the National Guard and Coast Guard was launched after flash floods swept several occupied homes off their foundations in the coastal communities of Na'alehu and Wai'ohinu, Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda said. 'What makes this very challenging is that there's rushing water, there's debris, and there's boulders on the road and it's dark,' Alameda said.
