Jordan's Formal Condemnation
The Jordanian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Fuad Majali issued an official statement on September 27, 2026, expressing absolute rejection and strong condemnation of the latest settler incursion earlier that day. He characterized the actions as a blatant violation of international law and international humanitarian law, marking an attempt to impose new realities at the compound through efforts to divide it temporally and spatially.
Majali also criticized provocative acts and inflammatory statements by extremist Israeli officials, warning that continued violations and provocations could have serious consequences for the stability of the region and the safety of worshippers at the holy site.
Legal and Religious Authority
Majali stressed that Israel has no sovereignty over occupied Jerusalem or its holy sites, and reiterated that Al-Aqsa Mosque, in its entire 144-dunum area, is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims. He emphasized that the Jerusalem Awqaf and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department, affiliated with Jordan's Ministry of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs and Holy Places, is the legally authorized body with exclusive jurisdiction over the administration of all affairs related to Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The spokesperson added that this includes the exclusive right to regulate access to the compound, underscoring Jordan's longstanding role as the custodian of the holy site and its commitment to preserving its sanctity and integrity for all Muslim worshippers.
Call for International Action
Jordan urged the international community to take a firm position compelling Israel, as the occupying power, to halt the irresponsible practices and continued violations against Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. The statement called for an end to illegal measures in the occupied West Bank and incitement against the Palestinian people.
Majali concluded by warning that failure to address these issues could lead to further escalation, and called on global powers to hold Israel accountable for its actions and to support the preservation of Jerusalem's holy sites as shared heritage.
