Rescuers worked through the night and into Tuesday searching collapsed buildings in western Colombia after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake killed at least 132 people and left more than 2,700 missing, according to local media and government officials.
Death Toll and Damage
At least 132 people were killed in Colombia's strongest earthquake this century, with 35 dead in Cali, 40 in the Risaralda region, nine in Choco, two in Caldas and one in Antioquia. At least 87 were initially reported injured, but President Abelardo de la Espriella later said 700 were hurt in Valle del Cauca alone.
About 1,600 buildings have been damaged or destroyed, including the towers of a historic cathedral in Manizales. Several top floors of a Cali hospital collapsed, forcing about 600 patients to be treated on a street strewn with rubble, hospital director Irne Torres Castro told Caracol television.
Rescue Efforts and Challenges
Search and rescue operations continued into Tuesday with soldiers, emergency workers, firefighters, volunteers and relatives digging through collapsed buildings. Two women and two children were rescued from a collapsed building, while in Pereira rescue workers said they were in contact with a boy trapped beneath a bakery.
Authorities deployed engineers, rescue workers and search dogs to the Choco region, where the epicentre San Jose Del Palmar is located. The remote area is reachable only by boat or plane, complicating assessments of the wider toll.
Government and International Response
President de la Espriella, who assumed power on Friday, said the government had mobilised the entire military and police apparatus for the response. He visited Quibdo and Cali, promised rental subsidies for damaged homes and declared nighttime curfews in Cali, Armenia and Manizales.
The US announced $15.5m in emergency assistance for shelters, food and other earthquake relief. The European Union mobilised the Copernicus satellite service to support rescue operations, while El Salvador and Mexico said they were ready to assist Colombia.
