At least 224 people have been killed and more than 2,700 remain unaccounted for after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, with the worst damage concentrated in Cali, Quibdo and Pereira.
Widespread Destruction Across Disadvantaged Regions
The 7.4-magnitude tremor destroyed or damaged approximately 1,600 buildings, hitting some of Colombia's most disadvantaged areas with particular force. Roughly 2,700 people have been reported missing as rescue crews continue to work through the night searching the rubble of collapsed structures.
Among the hardest-hit zones is Choco, one of the country's poorest and most neglected regions, where the full extent of the damage remains unclear. In Quibdo, the departmental capital, local official Jenny Rivas said public services and communications have been virtually shut down.
Venezuelan President Deploys Military Aid to Quibdo
Venezuelan President Abelardo de la Espriella travelled to Quibdo on Monday night to assess the damage, announcing he was mobilising the entire military and police apparatus to respond. He deployed engineers, rescue workers and search dogs, and also announced rental subsidies for those whose homes were damaged while they undergo repairs.
The president vowed a whole-of-government response to the crisis, underscoring the severity of the humanitarian emergency unfolding in western Colombia.
International Aid and Personal Accounts of the Quake
The US State Department announced it would provide $US15.5 million ($21 million) for emergency shelter, food and other aid, while governments across Latin America also lined up to help. The earthquake came after two back-to-back quakes in June caused widespread devastation and claimed the lives of more than 6,300 people in neighbouring Venezuela.
Survivors described the terrifying moment the ground shook. Mónica Sánchez, whose factory in Pereira was struck, said: 'It was shocking — the city fell down around us.' Tattoo artist Andres Hernandez added: 'It was a movie scene, because I saw the poles, the cables, everything moving.'
