Gusting winds and a second regional fire have driven mass evacuations in France, with neighbouring Spain also affected
Wildfires in southwest France have forced more than 250,000 people from their homes. A fire in the Gironde region has displaced 220,000 alone after 55,000 new evacuations, while a separate blaze in Landes drove out 30,000 more this week.
Gironde evacuations and highway closure
Authorities in the Gironde region, where Bordeaux is located, issued overnight evacuation orders on Sunday for five more localities southwest of the historic city. The new orders expanded the displacement already underway in the area.
The Gironde prefect also ordered the partial closure of a major highway heading southwest from Bordeaux. The measure was taken as gusting winds fed the flames overnight and accelerated the spread of the fire burning out of control since midweek.
Bordeaux mayor warns of proximity
The city's mayor said the fire "is still at the gates of the metropolitan area", having advanced to about 15km (9 miles) from Bordeaux at its closest point. The statement underscores the threat to the urban centre from the uncontrolled wildfire.
The advance follows days of escalation since the fire began midweek. Gusting winds overnight pushed the flames closer to Bordeaux, prompting successive evacuation orders across surrounding communes in the Gironde region.
Landes fire and Spain evacuations
A second fire burning further south in the Landes region has also forced the evacuation of 30,000 people this week. The combined displacements from both French fires now exceed 250,000 residents driven from their homes.
In neighbouring Spain, authorities have evacuated 70,000 people this week because of fires west of Madrid. The parallel evacuations reflect a wider regional wildfire emergency across southwest Europe.
