France requests EU assistance amid evacuations
President Emmanuel Macron said that France has invoked the EU's civil protection mechanism to ask for help to tackle forest fires. He posted that "We will soon have support from two Croatian Canadair aircraft, two Portuguese Air Tractors and two heavy-lift Black Hawk helicopters from the Czech Republic and Slovakia."
Authorities evacuated 7,000 people as a precaution on Thursday north of Cap Ferret near Arcachon Bay, bringing total evacuees there to 12,000. Fires had ravaged around 2,000 hectares by Wednesday. Climate change is making such extreme weather events more frequent and severe.
Italy battles blazes and suspects arson
Around 6,000 firefighters and officials have been deployed across Sicily after days of fires. Regional president Renato Schifani said about 50 fires were still burning despite water-bombing aircraft. In Calabria, more than 160 fires have been recorded.
Local officials in Calabria accused "malicious individuals" of arson, pointing to rags doused in flammable liquid tied to stray cats' tails to spread fires. The widespread evacuations and destruction reflect a worsening wildfire crisis across southern Europe this summer.
