Scottie Scheffler surged to an eight-shot triumph at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, delivering the largest margin of victory in TPC Southwind history and opening the PGA Tour playoffs with commanding form.
A Historic Performance Under Pressure
Scheffler closed with a 4-under 66 to finish at 17-under 263, surpassing the previous record of John Cook's seven-shot win in 1996. The victory came after a near-miss on the par-5 third, where a bunker shot landed on a sprinkler head and rolled into the water for bogey. 'Man, when is this going to stop happening?' Scheffler said, before recovering with consecutive birdies on the fifth and sixth holes.
The eight-shot margin was the biggest in the 68-year history of the event, leaving his Dallas neighbor Si Woo Kim eight shots behind with a 68. Scheffler's first win in nearly seven months marked a turning point in a season defined by consistency rather than trophy count, as he had only one title from his season opener at The American Express.
Season Dominance and FedEx Cup Implications
Scheffler now holds 21 career PGA Tour victories, with 10 coming by four shots or more. He earned $3.6 million from the prize fund and clinched an additional $23 million in FedEx Cup bonus money for his No. 1 ranking, which remains uncatchable heading into the BMW Championship. Sam Burns, who played alongside him in the final group, shot 73 and tied for third with Alex Noren (69).
Burns noted, 'I don't think it would have mattered if I played well. He was going to be tough to beat today.' Scheffler's record includes two victories, five runner-up finishes, and five other top-4 results, positioning him for a fifth straight PGA Tour Player of the Year award with two tournaments still remaining.
Playoff Qualifiers and Legacy Moments
Sungjae Im finished with a 75 to tie for fifth, but his performance moved him from No. 53 into the top 50 who advance to the BMW Championship. Im kept alive his chances of reaching the Tour Championship every year since his rookie season in 2019. The top 50 qualifiers are also assured of playing all $20 million signature events next year.
This was the first FedEx Cup playoffs opener Scheffler had won, and the first time he had triumphed at TPC Southwind. His dominance underscores a season where no other player has stood out based on titles alone, yet his body of work continues to set the standard for excellence on the PGA Tour.
