Mohamed Salah has confirmed his departure from Liverpool, agreeing a two-year contract with Turkish side Trabzonspor following the expiry of his Anfield deal. The 34-year-old Egyptian will be paid £14.5m per season and will wear the number 10 shirt for the 2026-27 campaign.
A Surprising European Destination
Salah's decision to remain in Europe defied expectations, as Saudi Pro League clubs and MLS sides had long been viewed as realistic destinations for one of the world's biggest stars. Besiktas attempted to sign him before negotiations collapsed, opening the door for Trabzonspor to secure the marquee signing.
The club finished third in last season's Super Lig and will compete in this month's Europa League play-offs, where victory would see them qualify for the league phase. Salah instantly becomes the biggest signing in Trabzonspor's history, with hundreds of supporters gathering to welcome him before his arrival in the Black Sea city.
Financial Package and Contract Details
Trabzonspor confirmed via a posting to the Turkish stock exchange that Salah will be paid £14.5m per season and will receive a 20% share of revenue from Salah-branded merchandise. Reports in Turkey say he has signed a two-year contract until June 2028 worth around £7.3m per season, below the salary he could reportedly have earned in Saudi Arabia.
During his unveiling, Salah briefly wore a symbolic number 61 shirt in tribute to the city, with the number representing Trabzon's vehicle registration code. Team-mate Ernest Muci agreed to relinquish the number 10 jersey as a gesture of respect for the club's marquee signing, which he will wear for the 2026-27 season.
Rising Profile of Turkish Football
Salah's move is the latest sign of Turkish football's growing appeal to established stars, with Victor Osimhen, Leroy Sane, Ilkay Gundogan, Nathan Ake and Leandro Trossard among the high-profile names now playing in the Super Lig. The league recorded the third-highest net transfer spend in world football last summer, behind only the Premier League and Saudi Pro League.
Former Scotland midfielder Ryan Jack, who has spent the last two seasons playing in Turkey, said: 'That's one thing about Turkish football - the fans are incredibly passionate.' He added: 'I loved it. Everyone helps you settle in and the people are really friendly. When foreign players arrive, the clubs do everything they can to help them.'
