Hundreds of supporters gathered outside Ataturk Airport on Wednesday as Salah emerged in Trabzonspor colours, waving and joining a traditional chant before heading to a medical check and a later flight east to Trabzon. The club had announced negotiations with the Egyptian forward a day earlier, and Salah posted a video saying: 'Trabzon, are you ready? I can hear you. See you very soon.'
He added: 'Everywhere is Trabzon to us,' echoing the club's motto while wearing the new kit. The signing is expected to be the biggest in Trabzonspor's history, joining former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge and former Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe in the claret and sky blue shirt.
A Liverpool Legend Leaves Behind
Salah departed Liverpool at the end of last season after nine years on Merseyside, scoring 257 goals in 442 appearances and winning the Premier League twice and the Champions League once. In the 2024-25 season he scored 29 Premier League goals and provided 18 assists, equalling the league record for most goal involvements in a single season and setting the record for a 38-game campaign.
He was named Premier League Player of the Season and won the Golden Boot and the Playmaker Award, becoming the first player to take all three in one campaign. His output waned last season with seven goals and seven assists in 27 league matches, and he had a public spat with Liverpool's then-manager Arne Slot.
Trabzonspor's Bold New Chapter
Trabzonspor finished third in the Super Lig last season and will enter the Europa League playoff round, with their last league championship in the 2021-22 season. The club, generally considered the fourth biggest team in Turkey after Fenerbahce, Galatasaray and Besiktas, has won seven league titles, six of which came between 1976 and 1984.
Salah had been close to joining Besiktas, but negotiations stalled over financial and image-rights demands. His arrival is expected to bring supporters back, significantly increase shirt sales and broaden Trabzonspor's commercial appeal across the Middle East, while generating particular interest among the Arab community in Trabzon and visitors to the city.
