Kim's Stellar Round
Grace Kim, the world number 38, produced a commanding 6-under 66 in the opening round, recording seven birdies and an eagle while managing only three bogeys. She started her round on the 10th hole and immediately found her rhythm with a three-birdie stretch that set the tone for the day. Kim also used just 24 putts, the fewest of any player in the field, showcasing exceptional short-game precision.
The 25-year-old major champion said: 'Having that three-birdie start is just a nice feeling to kick-start things.' She added: 'A lot of us out here are pretty straight, fairways and greens. But in terms of holing all those putts, knowing that the greens roll quite true … it's really nice to just put a stroke on it and see where it would normally go.' Kim enters the event with momentum, having recorded two straight top-10 finishes prior to the Portland Classic.
Galdiano Leads, Marin Joins the Pack
Colombian Mariel Galdiano, a 28-year-old from Hawaii making her fourth LPGA Tour start of the year, shot a 6-under 65 with nine birdies to take the outright lead. Galdiano said: 'Every start on the LPGA means a lot to me, so just enjoy the moment, really.' She is the only player ahead of Kim and fellow Australian Robyn Choi, who is tied for ninth at one shot behind Kim.
Maria Jose Marin, the 20-year-old Augusta National women's amateur champion, is in a batch at 6-under with Kim. Marin landed five-straight birdies on the front nine and said: 'I reached a flow state that I haven't reached in a while.' She added: 'After the British Open I didn't play my best golf, and I think getting that confidence back with this round is all that I needed.' Arpichaya Yubol and Olivia Cowan are also in the 6-under group.
Choi and Kyriacou Round Out the Field
Fellow Australian Robyn Choi shot a 67 to tie for ninth, one shot behind Kim. Choi started the round in even par with a birdie and bogey but sprang to life on the back nine with four consecutive birdies beginning on the 12th, adding another on the 17th to rocket up the leaderboard. Her late surge kept her in contention despite a modest start.
Steph Kyriacou shot an even par 72 in the opening round and will need a solid second round to make the cut, which is projected to be around 1-under par. Kim's strong performance and the competitive nature of the field suggest a tight race ahead as the Portland Classic continues at the Columbia-Edgewater Country Club.
