Itauma, 21 years and 244 days old, would become the youngest heavyweight champion since Mike Tyson if he defeats Hrgovic. Queensberry Promotions signed the Chatham fighter when he was just 16 and sponsored him as an amateur before he turned professional.
The 21-year-old has recorded 12 knockouts in 14 professional victories and impressed with a fifth-round stoppage of Jermaine Franklin in Manchester in March and a one-round victory over Dillian Whyte in August 2025.
Frank Sanchez Steps Aside After Payment
Itauma was initially ordered to negotiate with Cuban Frank Sanchez for the vacant title by 29 July, but Sanchez has agreed to step aside and face the winner instead. Promoter Frank Warren confirmed that Queensberry paid Sanchez some money to withdraw from the bout.
Warren explained: 'We paid [Sanchez] some money. We said whoever wins the fight, you're not losing out and you'll get the opportunity to fight for the title against the winner.' Sanchez will now challenge the victor of the Itauma-Hrgovic contest.
Path to a Wembley Unification Fight
A victory for Itauma could set up an all-British unification fight at Wembley Stadium in 2027, with WBO champion Daniel Dubois defeating Fabio Wardley in May to become a two-time heavyweight world champion. Warren confirmed the pair will contest a rematch in October.
Warren described the potential matchup: 'It would be huge, absolutely huge. They're big punchers. These guys are big, big punchers. They're exciting. They're not in boring fights.' Wardley and Itauma are both trained by Ben Davison.
