Chicago Bears safety Coby Bryant will be sidelined for four to six months after undergoing knee surgery on August 7, coach Ben Johnson confirmed Tuesday. The injury occurred during one-on-one drills when Bryant hyperextended his left knee, sustaining a bone bruise and a small fracture.
Surgery and Injury Details
Bryant was driven back to the practice facility on a cart after the incident, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Bears sought multiple medical opinions on the safety's condition, which ultimately led to the decision for surgery.
Johnson expressed confidence in Bryant's recovery, noting that the player will be eager to return and contribute to the team's goals toward the end of the season.
Impact on the Secondary
Bryant's absence compounds a series of injuries that have plagued the Bears' defensive backfield throughout training camp. Cornerback Kyler Gordon has been on the physically unable to perform list with a calf injury since before practices began, while backup safety Elijah Hicks is also sidelined with a similar issue.
The team lost reserve defensive backs Gervarrius Owens and Dallis Flowers to significant leg injuries last week, and Cam Lewis, who had been filling in at safety, also suffered an injury during Saturday's practice.
Mitigation and Other Updates
To address the growing list of injuries, the Bears signed 10-year veteran safety Xavier Woods on Friday. Woods played opposite first-round rookie Dillon Thieneman during Sunday's practice with the first-team defense, and is expected to solidify that position amid the absences.
Johnson also provided updates on other players, including wide receiver Luther Burden III, who has a groin injury and is hoping to be ready for the season opener against Carolina on September 12, and left tackle Ozzy Trapilo, who could return from the PUP list by the end of training camp.
