Police Launch Enquiries Into Missing Athletes
Police Scotland said it had received reports of several athletes who are unaccounted for and is conducting enquiries while engaging with the Home Office. The confirmation came after the closing ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which saw around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations compete in Glasgow.
The Games chief executive, Phil Batty, stated that his team works closely with Police Scotland, the Border Force and UK visas and immigration to ensure everyone arrives and departs in line with regulation. He emphasized the importance of monitoring athlete movements throughout the event.
Uganda Boxing Federation Responds to Reports
Moses Muhangi, president of the Uganda Boxing Federation, told AFP that it was too early to say that the four boxers disappeared, noting the athletes' UK visas were still valid. He identified the team captain, Nuhu Batte, as one of those who have not yet returned to Uganda.
Among the two boxers who did return was Aziz Abdul, a grandson of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, who was disqualified for a headbutt in his quarterfinal match. Muhangi indicated that several team members were expected to return later in the week or over the weekend.
Broader Concerns Over Athlete Safety
The situation has raised broader concerns about athlete safety at international sporting events, with regional media also reporting that a Pakistani boxer failed to return home on schedule. This adds to the growing list of athletes whose whereabouts remain unclear after the Games.
Authorities have not provided further details on the circumstances surrounding the missing athletes, but the ongoing enquiries suggest that the matter is being treated seriously. Families and officials in Uganda are awaiting updates on the safety and whereabouts of their compatriots.
