Former England Test captain Ben Stokes has revealed he would love to become the national team's coach one day, speaking on a cricket podcast shortly after his retirement announcement.
Stokes Confirms Retirement and Coaching Ambitions
The 35-year-old all-rounder, who captained England in Tests since 2022, announced his retirement from international cricket in June during the third and final Test against New Zealand. He has since rejected suggestions he could return for the 2027 Ashes, telling former teammate Jos Buttler: 'Definitely' when asked if he had retired. Stokes is now undertaking his level three coaching qualification while still playing, saying he wants to have everything signed off before his playing days end.
Speaking on the For the Love of Cricket podcast, Stokes said: 'I know what I want to do in terms of staying within the game, which is to be a coach. And would I love to be coach of England one day? Absolutely.' He added that he likes the idea of being in 'some form of leadership away from playing' and expressed genuine enthusiasm about the prospect of coaching the team he led for five years.
Surprise at Brook Passing Over and Concern for Root
Stokes expressed surprise that Harry Brook did not succeed him as Test captain, having backed the batter to take over the role. Brook had been promoted to vice-captain during last winter's Ashes tour, but was involved in an off-field controversy in Wellington when he was struck by a bouncer the night before a white-ball game in November. Stokes said: 'I understood the reasoning but I was still like, well, what message is that sending to him? He's vice-captain. And then the captain is not playing, but he's not captain. What?'
England have now appointed Joe Root as permanent Test captain, with Root's first spell running from 2017 to 2022 when he led the team to a record 27 wins in 65 matches. Root stepped down in April 2022 after a 10-wicket defeat by the West Indies, saying the job 'took its toll' on his health. Stokes said his only worry is for Root, noting: 'I've seen what he went through and how much he put himself through for someone. He's just always put the team first - he always comes second.'
Stokes Addresses Rumours of Rift with McCullum
There were rumours of a rift between Stokes and former coach Brendon McCullum during the latter stages of their time together, but both have denied any falling out. McCullum was fired as Test coach following poor results and off-field incidents, though he remains in charge of England's white-ball sides. McCullum said he told his former captain he considered him a 'good friend', while Stokes said the pair are 'mates'.
When asked about their relationship, Stokes said: 'We never once fell out.' He acknowledged they had different views but insisted: 'Did we have discussions with each other that we had different views on and different opinions on? 100% and we both admit that. I think Baz has even said that himself. Did we have a fallout? Absolutely not.' Stokes also expressed hope that Root will enjoy working with new Test coach Stephen Fleming, who replaced McCullum.
