Somalia’s president, international partners hold fresh talks to break electoral deadlock

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met international partners on Tuesday as diplomatic efforts gathered pace to ease growing political tensions over Somalia’s electoral process and encourage dialogue between the federal government and the opposition.

The discussions followed a separate meeting a day earlier between international representatives and opposition leaders, where both sides explored ways to reduce the electoral standoff and build broader political consensus.

Officials familiar with Tuesday’s talks said President Mohamud used the meeting to present the federal government’s electoral agenda, which is focused on introducing nationwide direct elections based on the principle of one person, one vote.

The government argues that future members of parliament should be elected through universal suffrage, replacing Somalia’s existing indirect electoral model.

Opposition figures, however, continue to press for wider political agreement on the proposed electoral framework, warning that unresolved differences could further intensify the country’s political crisis.

The latest diplomatic engagement reflects increasing international efforts to bring Somalia’s political stakeholders closer to a shared position as the country works towards agreement on its electoral roadmap.
