At the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, countries and partners reaffirmed their commitment to UNAIDS, pledging new funding and backing its transformation as the global HIV response enters a critical phase.
Renewed Country Commitments Signal Strong Support
The Government of Benin signed a new agreement with UNAIDS, committing over €500,000 to support the agency's work in Benin during 2026-2027. President Duma Boko of Botswana also reaffirmed his country's confidence in UNAIDS and offered additional support for its presence in the country and the wider sub-region.
Benin and Botswana join a growing list of nations making new or enhanced pledges to UNAIDS. Recent financial contributions from countries including Algeria, China, Côte d'Ivoire, Kazakhstan, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, the Philippines, South Africa and Thailand demonstrate broad recognition of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS.
African Health Sovereignty Emerges as Key Agenda
A flagship event convened jointly with the African Union Development Agency (AU NEPAD) brought together ministers, policymakers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, civil society and people living with HIV to accelerate African local production of medicines and health technologies.
Participants explored practical steps to strengthen regulatory systems and create sustainable markets for essential medicines. High-level attendees underscored that achieving health sovereignty requires Africa to become a producer, not simply a consumer, of critical health products.
UNAIDS Transformation Draws High-Level Attention
In partnership with the Governments of Botswana and the Netherlands, UNAIDS convened a high-level discussion on the transformation of the Joint Programme and its future role in the global HIV response. The event attracted over 16 ministers, senior government representatives and civil society figures.
Participants welcomed the progress made in the transformation process and underscored the importance of maintaining UNAIDS' unique mandate to unite governments, communities, multilateral organizations and development partners. Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed described the global HIV response as 'among the finest achievements of the UN.'
