Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro arrived in Washington seeking US recognition, but a September 14 appearance at the Hudson Institute drew sharp criticism after clips of his brief and hesitant answers went viral online.
A minerals question becomes a political moment
When asked about resources Somaliland could offer American companies, Mr Irro replied: 'I'm not a geologist.' He then laughed and added: 'I don't know… maybe everything.' The exchange was brief, but the subject was not.
Critical minerals have become an increasingly important component of international competition over supply chains, advanced manufacturing and national security. For Somaliland, mineral resources form part of a broader economic proposition that Hargeisa is putting before potential foreign partners.
From recognition to strategic partnership
At the Hudson Institute, Mr Irro said: 'Practically [Somaliland] is not part of Somalia.' He also described Somaliland as theoretically part of Somalia. The distinction reflects the central paradox of Somaliland's position.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 after the collapse of the Somali state. Its government argues that decades of separate political administration justify international recognition, while Somalia rejects that position and continues to defend the country's territorial integrity.
Israel has changed the equation
Israel became the first UN member state to formally recognise Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the decision on December 26, 2025, with both sides signing a declaration of mutual recognition.
Somalia condemned the move as a violation of its sovereignty. The African Union also rejected the recognition and reaffirmed its support for Somalia's territorial integrity. Washington has not followed Israel in recognising Somaliland.
