How a Solar Eclipse Works
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun, blocking all or part of the Sun's light. During a total eclipse, the sky darkens dramatically and resembles twilight, visible only to observers within the Moon's central shadow path.
A partial eclipse happens when the Moon passes in front of the Sun but is too far away to cover it completely. In this case, the Sun appears crescent-shaped, and a bright ring of light may be seen around the Moon's edge.
Where and When to Watch
NASA says the total eclipse will begin in the afternoon in a small area of Northern Russia before moving westward to Spain, where it will be visible in the evening just before sunset. The total phase will last less than two and a half minutes.
Parts of the northern United States, Canada, western Africa, and much of Europe will see a partial eclipse, with some areas covering more than 90% of the Sun. This event is unique because parts of Africa and Europe will see the eclipse at sunset.
Safety Tips for Viewing
It is critical not to look directly at the Sun during the eclipse, even with regular sunglasses, as this can cause permanent damage to the retina. Only use special eclipse glasses that meet the international standard ISO 12312-2.
Even with proper glasses, do not use cameras, telescopes, or binoculars to view the Sun, as concentrated rays can burn the protective lens. Indirect methods, such as using two pieces of cardboard with a small hole, or watching live broadcasts like NASA's, are safe alternatives.
