Wasiirka gobolka Cumberland Ola Hamed ayaa sheegay inay xukuumaddu la shaqeynayo ciidamada amniga si loo yareeyo dhaqdhaqaaqyada dambiga.
Western Sydney communities are reeling after a string of mistaken-identity shootings linked to organised crime have left eight innocent people dead since 2021, with two victims killed in as many days last month.
Innocent Lives Lost in Rapid Succession
Two 16-year-old boys and a 14-year-old boy have been charged with the alleged mistaken-identity murder of university student Marco Tapia at a Glen Alpine home last month. Detective Superintendent Joe Doueihi said the group intended to target someone on the same street as Mr Tapia. Within 48 hours, tradie Joshua Macdonald was shot dead in a doorway of a Merrylands West property near a school at about 3:15pm.
An 11-year-old boy also died after being shot in the face at Norwest last month, in a home with men linked to organised crime present. Circumstances of that shooting remain under investigation. NSW Police have described young people increasingly being hired by offshore criminals to commit what they have called disorganised crime.
Community Fear and Anger Mount
Residents impacted by gang violence say they are scared and unnerved. A beauty therapist in Merrylands said she has considered moving because of criminal activity, noting that people dear to her have had their houses shot at. She said it could be mistaken identity or wrong place, wrong time, and it is even happening in daylight now.
Cumberland City Council Mayor Ola Hamed said it was terrifying that the shootings were encroaching on public spaces. A Glen Alpine business owner said friends are really quite angry that someone comes into their neighbourhood and does that to some poor, innocent young man. Growing up, it wasn't like that, she said, and now she would not feel safe for her kids to play outside.
Police Say They Are Disrupting Criminal Networks
Detective Acting Chief Superintendent Matt Craft said in mid-September that Taskforce Falcon conducted over 668 proactive taskings in September alone, which can vary from simple door knocks to the foiling of live murder plots. This year alone, over 100 acts of violence or murders have been interdicted by NSW Police.
The community is safer as a consequence of that, he said. However, residents remain concerned that gang-related crime is on the increase and that people are taking drastic measures because they are just so concerned. Mistaken identity, it just leaves you wondering if there is a drug dealer or someone with the same name as me, that they are going to kick my front door down.
