Authorities are probing whether a Flydubai pilot attempted to crash a flight bound for Tel Aviv after the aircraft lost roughly half its altitude in a single minute, forcing an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
The Incident and Emergency Landing
Flydubai confirmed that flight FZ 1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 departing Dubai for Tel Aviv, experienced an incident en route and landed safely at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. A spokesperson stated that all passengers were safe and accounted for, though the underlying reasons for the altercation in the flight deck remained unknown and were under formal investigation.
Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 reported that authorities were investigating whether one pilot deliberately tried to crash the aircraft, with the other pilot intervening to stop him. Israeli media said one of the pilots suffered a stab wound, and initial reports described the event only as a fight between the two pilots before images appeared to show a passenger with blood on his shirt.
Israeli Leaders Describe Jihadist Attack Attempt
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that during the flight, one pilot stabbed the other and apparently tried to crash the plane with everyone on board. He added that passengers and crew subdued the attacker, and the pilot was arrested after the emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz described the incident as an attempted jihadist terror attack that was thwarted only thanks to the heroism of several Israeli passengers. Netanyahu saluted the passengers and crew for their exceptional resourcefulness and courage, saying they saved many lives and prevented a major disaster.
Flight Data and Military Response
Flight tracking data shows the aircraft suddenly losing around half its altitude as it neared Saudi Arabia's border with Jordan. The plane dropped from nearly 34,000 feet at 05:21 GMT to below 17,000 feet at 05:22 GMT, according to Flightradar data, while Ynet reported that passengers helped one pilot prevent the other from crashing the plane.
Israel's Kan public broadcaster and Channel 12 reported that the Israeli military scrambled fighter jets amid initial fears of a possible hijacking, though that possibility was later dismissed. Different outlets have given different nationalities for the pilot and co-pilot, with some saying one was Russian and the other Ukrainian, while others state they were Omani and Emirati.
