Boqolkiiba Ilaalada iyo Caydhka King
Ku dhawaad 5,000 xubnood oo Ilaalada Qaranka ayaa loo diray D.C. iyada oo qayb ka ah kooxdii anti-crime ee Madaxweyne Trump bishii August ee la soo dhaafay, iyadoo dambiyadu ay ahaayeen kuwii 30-sano ee ugu yar. Dhamaan waxaa sarkaal ka dhigay Marshals Service
King waxaa habeen ku xidhay Booliska Metropolitan, waxaana hadda lagu eedeynayaa in ay weerartay xubnihii xannibay. Waxay tiri: 'I'm not going to stop sitting outside of my home on my bench, and I'm not going to stop bringing awareness to the fact that armed National Guardsmen in any city in the U.S. is uncalled for.'
On May 8, retired U.S. Army Captain Anna King was pushed to the ground and zip-tied by three Idaho National Guard members in her Washington, D.C. front yard while sitting on her porch. The incident, captured on a Ring security camera, has prompted a federal lawsuit seeking $3 million in damages.
The Detention and Aftermath
King, a decorated veteran who earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star during her service in Iraq, told the guards: 'Get away from me right now. You have absolutely no authority to detain me.' Despite her protests, the three Idaho National Guard members entered her property, overcame her resistance, and restrained her with zip ties.
Following the detention, Metropolitan Police were called to the scene. King was held overnight and is now facing charges of assaulting the very guards who detained her. Her attorneys describe the National Guard's justification—that she assaulted a guard member two days earlier—as 'baseless,' noting that no charges have been filed against her for that alleged incident.
A Broader Pattern of Concern
King's attorneys believe she was targeted because she has been a vocal critic of the National Guard's deployment, displaying signs such as 'Occupation: Troops Out' and 'National Guard Stop Being So Embarrassing.' Michael Perloff, a senior staff attorney at the ACLU of DC, said: 'This is a troubling example of what happens when you rely on National Guard members to do your policing. National Guard members aren't trained for this work.'
The incident is part of a larger deployment of nearly 5,000 National Guard members to D.C. under President Trump's anti-crime task force, launched last August despite a 30-year-low in crime. All troops in the task force have been deputized as special police by the U.S. Marshals Service and are carrying handguns, a rarity for domestic National Guard operations.
Physical and Emotional Toll
King sustained serious injuries to her wrist from the tight zip ties and required surgery. She is also suffering from post-traumatic symptoms, stating: 'Being a combat veteran, having served in war to then be abused and assaulted by National Guardsmen at home has deeply decreased my ability to sleep again. I'm having nightmares daily.'
The Idaho National Guard declined to comment due to ongoing litigation but stated it is committed to the professionalism and accountability of its service members. King has vowed to continue her protests, saying: 'I'm not going to stop sitting outside of my home on my bench, and I'm not going to stop bringing awareness to the fact that armed National Guardsmen in any city in the U.S. is uncalled for.'
