Haiti's health cluster reported that ten major armed violence incidents displaced 50,867 people during the second quarter of 2026, a 19% rise from the previous quarter, with the Ouest department absorbing 64% of movements linked to Cité Soleil. Meanwhile, cholera transmission remains low and stable, with suspected cases dropping 48% year-on-year as of mid-July.
Armed Violence Drives Sharp Displacement Surge in Ouest
During the second quarter of 2026, ten major armed violence incidents displaced 50,867 people, representing a 19% increase compared to the prior quarter. After months of deterioration in the Artibonite and Centre departments, the Ouest department became the epicentre of new displacements, concentrating 64% of recorded movements during the period, primarily due to armed violence in Cité Soleil commune.
The concentration of displacement in the Ouest department reflects the intensification of conflict in Cité Soleil, which has become the main driver of population movements in the region. This shift underscores the evolving security landscape across Haiti's departments and the growing humanitarian pressure on health and protection services.
Diphtheria Cases Decline After Epidemiological Week 21
Suspected diphtheria cases began declining from the 21st epidemiological week, following a total of 42 suspected cases reported across 15 PDI sites in the Ouest department since January 2026. These sites include Cité Soleil, Delmas, Pétion-Ville, and Port-au-Prince, indicating a broad surveillance network tracking the disease.
The downward trend in diphtheria cases signals improved control measures and community response efforts. However, the persistence of the disease in urban centres like Cité Soleil highlights the need for sustained vaccination campaigns and health system strengthening to prevent future outbreaks.
Cholera Transmission Drops 48% Amid Ongoing Vigilance
The cholera epidemic has been in constant decline since its resurgence in October 2022, with transmission dropping by nearly 80% in 2024 after a peak of 3,683 suspected weekly cases. In 2025, cumulative cases at the same period reached 85, and by July 18, 2026, only 44 suspected cases were recorded, a 48% decrease.
The level of cholera transmission remains low and stable, confirming control progress. Nevertheless, maintaining surveillance and response capacities is essential to prevent any resurgence, given the active circulation of vibrio and the persistence of propagation risk factors across the country.
