UNRWA launched the 2026/2027 school year across the Gaza Strip on 19 September, with nearly 97,000 students attending learning spaces in the first week. Yet the agency warns that hundreds of damaged structures remain unsafe, fuel shortages are crippling hospitals, and 94 per cent of the population requires shelter assistance.
Education Resumes Amidst Ongoing Danger
UNRWA opened the 2026/2027 academic year on 19 September through a hybrid model of in-person and distance learning, with a launch event held in Nuseirat Camp at a school that has fully returned to education use after previously serving as an emergency shelter. Students also returned to in-person classes at both campuses of the UNRWA Rehabilitation Centre for the Visually Impaired, with Deir El Balah resuming on 19 September and Gaza City on 20 September.
The agency also expanded vocational capacity by opening two additional carpentry workshops, bringing the total to three facilities operating in Khan Younis, Deir El Balah and Gaza City. Together, these workshops can produce approximately 450 school desks and chairs per week to support the expansion of learning spaces across the Strip.
Shelter Collapse and Health System Under Siege
Multiple war-damaged residential buildings collapsed in the Gaza Strip during the reporting period, prompting UN Humanitarian Coordinator Ramiz Alakbarov to warn that people live in 'hundreds of damaged structures assessed as unsafe, for lack of better options'. Some families are now sheltering in non-operational UNRWA installations for safety, and with winter approaching, risks are expected to increase as rainfall further weakens already compromised structures.
The worsening fuel and engine oil shortage is increasingly disrupting health services across the Gaza Strip, with several UNRWA health centres experiencing temporary disruptions due to generator overload. The UN warned that reduced fuel support to hospitals, driven by funding shortfalls and high procurement costs, could affect most hospitals and lead to cuts in primary and secondary healthcare services.
Humanitarian Needs Reach Critical Levels
According to the Shelter Cluster's classification, an estimated 1.98 million people, representing 94 per cent of the population of the Gaza Strip, require shelter and non-food item assistance, with 58 per cent facing critical or catastrophic shelter needs. Meanwhile, the WASH Cluster reports that 90 per cent of the population are experiencing frequent, unpredictable disruptions in access to safe, clean, and reliable water for daily drinking, cooking, and hygiene.
UNRWA has recorded 394 colleagues killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war, including 311 UNRWA personnel and 83 persons who were supporting UNRWA. Over the reporting period, hostilities in the vicinity of UNRWA facilities resulted in injuries to six displaced persons sheltering at UNRWA schools, including four children, while one cash-for-work beneficiary was killed and one UNRWA staff member seriously injured.
