Bystanders praised as heroes after intervening in CCTV-captured attack
Mihael Vrhovsek, 29, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after being convicted of attempted murder for a 2024 attack in Rivervale. A Supreme Court jury viewed graphic footage of the assault, and Justice Alain Musikanth praised bystanders as lifesaving heroes.
CCTV Captures Violent Assault
Vrhovsek grabbed the woman by the throat, lifted her off her feet and carried her, then dropped her limp body to the ground. A man intervened and confronted him, allowing a woman walking her dogs to drag the victim away from the immediate danger.
Vrhovsek broke free and ran after the woman, again beginning to choke her. The intervening man returned and punched and kicked Vrhovsek to force him to release his grip before the dog walker pulled the victim to safety a second time.
Court Details Prior Threats
In the days before the attack, Vrhovsek called or texted the woman more than 230 times using multiple phones. Justice Musikanth described the messages as 'abusive, menacing, and sinister'.
The woman reported his actions to police, stating she feared he would kill her. Defence cited a 'troubled upbringing' and struggles with 'demons' including self-medication, but the judge found no true empathy or remorse existed.
Sentence and Judicial Findings
Justice Musikanth said Vrhovsek used extreme violence, continuing to strangle the woman after she lost consciousness. He praised bystanders as 'instrumental' and called them 'heroes' for saving her life.
Vrhovsek received 16 years and may apply for parole in 2038. Defence argued 'visceral' remorse and low reoffence risk, but the court did not accept his remorse as genuine.
