Mohammad Baqer Kharrazi, general secretary of Iran's Hezbollah-linked group, has emerged as a key political voice despite holding no official government post. His close ties to the Khamenei family and recent inflammatory claims about President Pezeshkian have drawn sharp denials from Tehran's highest offices.
A Cleric with Deep Political Roots
Born on July 21, 1961, in Tehran and raised in the religious city of Qom, Kharrazi comes from a prominent clerical family. His father, Mohsen Kharrazi, was a long-serving teacher at the Qom seminary and represented Tehran in the Council of Experts for the second through fourth terms.
Kharrazi studied fiqh from his father and other teachers, and later pursued higher education in Canada, earning a master's degree listed as either 'Master of Finance and Banking' by IRNA or 'Master of Economics' by another source. From his youth, he participated in activities opposing the Pahlavi regime.
Family Ties to Iran's Supreme Leadership
Although Kharrazi himself has never held a senior government position, his family is deeply embedded in Iran's political establishment. His brother, Mohammad Sadeq Kharrazi, served as Iran's ambassador to France and later founded the Iran Renewal Party. His uncle, Kamal Kharrazi, was Foreign Minister under President Khatami and has headed the Strategic Council for Foreign Relations since 2006.
Kharrazi is the grandson of Massoud Khamenei, who rarely appears in public but is reportedly responsible for the Supreme Leader's security office and the publication of his writings. The family name also appeared in the 2016 US Treasury sanctions case against the Nobitex cryptocurrency company, which included 'Mohammad Kharrazi' as a sanctioned individual.
Controversial Claims and Official Denials
In recent days, Kharrazi made a series of inflammatory claims, including that President Masoud Pezeshkian had resigned or threatened to resign, and that Mojtaba Khamenei would accept a second resignation. He also claimed that Mohammad Baqer Zolghadr was being removed from the National Security Council and replaced by Mohsen Rezaei, and that Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi was told to stop participating in negotiations.
The President's Office dismissed Kharrazi's remarks about Pezeshkian's resignation as 'a lie without basis and meaning', while the Supreme Leader's Office denied the statement attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei. Kharrazi further claimed he would step down from his position if Pezeshkian did not resign, stating, 'Pezeshkian will not resign, I will step down from the position'.
