Life-like figures at One Mile Jetty Museum surprise visitors and boost regional tourism
Carnarvon's One Mile Jetty Museum has created a hyperreal exhibit featuring life-like mannequins around 900 kilometres north of Perth. Many visitors have been fooled into thinking the figures are real people, and volunteers hope to add more to represent the town's history.
Visitors React to Lifelike Figures
Museum volunteer Quentin Boyle has been entertained by watching visitors interact with the mannequin of local legend Winson Quan Sing. A local lady thought the mannequin had come out of his grave because it was that real, and an ex-police volunteer thought it felt like a dead body.
Samuel Gilbert visited from Secret Harbour in Perth's south and needed reassurance after seeing the figure. He tapped the mannequin's finger and thought 'thank God'. Mr Quan Sing's mannequin is the only one based on a real person; two others represent community builders.
Quan Sing Family and Community Legacy
The Quan Sing family moved from Derby to Carnarvon in the early 1930s and transformed an old corner shop into a known general store. The store burned in 1992 while Mr Quan Sing was hospitalised; he died that year. Housing now occupies the corner of Crowther and Olivia Terrace.
Carnarvon Heritage Group chair Dudley Maslen said multiculturalism shaped the town. He said the family 'met a lot of racism and battled on, and were great successes'. Today just under half of residents were born overseas per the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Upgrades and Tourism Growth
The exhibit is part of upgrades since Cyclone Seroja destroyed the One Mile Jetty in 2021. Mr Maslen found similar mannequins in Westonia and was put onto Melbourne makers. Before this year the museum averaged under $10,000 yearly; last year it took $70,000.
Mr Maslen credits the increase to upgraded facilities and volunteers. The Carnarvon Heritage Group hopes to add attractions and cement the site as a regional tourist hotspot. Volunteers plan more mannequins representing town history.
