Treasurer Jim Chalmers has warned that Australian workers should not be forced to absorb the economic fallout of a prolonged Middle East conflict as the Reserve Bank of Australia prepares to raise interest rates to a 15-year high.
Chalmers Defends Low Unemployment Amid Inflation Concerns
Treasurer Jim Chalmers told ABC Radio National Breakfast that it is possible to maintain full employment while achieving lower and more steady inflation, describing both as important objectives for the government. He said he does not believe inflation is out of control, but acknowledged that stubborn price rises are keeping the cash rate elevated.
Chalmers blamed the escalation of the war in the Middle East and surging global oil prices as major drivers of current inflation, arguing that these external factors are beyond the government's direct control and should not be used as an excuse to raise unemployment.
Tax Receipts Rise as Spending Falls Under Labor
The Final Budget Update released yesterday showed forecast tax receipts as a percentage of GDP rising from 23.6 to 24.1, a figure still below the levels recorded under the Howard and Costello governments. Chalmers said the government is cutting income taxes to help households manage the cost of living, which would otherwise push the tax-to-GDP ratio higher.
Chalmers also noted that government spending as a share of the economy is very substantially lower than when Labor came to office, attributing the improvement to banking upward revenue revisions. He admitted there is more work to do to get the budget in better nick and make further savings.
Opposition and Greens React to Expected Rate Hike
Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson said he does not believe unemployment rising above 5 per cent is the sole solution to fixing inflation, accusing both state and federal governments of forcing the Reserve Bank's hand with inflationary spending. He called for action from the government to address the upward pressure on interest rates.
Nationals leader Matt Canavan warned that today's expected rate hike could be the straw that breaks the camel's back for many families, also blaming government spending for fueling inflation. Meanwhile, Greens leader Larissa Waters announced she will step down from the party's leadership due to a kidney condition.
