Four recipients — AI researcher Timnit Gebru, Pakistani lawyer Jalila Haider, the Rural Women's Assembly and the Georgian Young Lawyers' Association — were named winners of the 2026 Right Livelihood Award, selected from 200 nominations across 72 countries.
AI Researcher Timnit Gebru Challenged Concentrated Power in Artificial Intelligence
Timnit Gebru, founder of the Distributed AI Research Institute, received the 2026 Right Livelihood Award for her work examining how artificial intelligence is shaped by bias. Born in Ethiopia to a family of Eritrean origin, Gebru co-led Google's Ethical AI team before the company dismissed her in 2020 after she refused to retract a paper on the risks of biases in large language models.
The Right Livelihood jury said she was honored 'for challenging concentrated power in artificial intelligence and pioneering digital technology rooted in justice, lived experience and human agency.' Her award recognises her refusal to compromise on ethical standards in the rapidly expanding field of AI.
Pakistani Lawyer Jalila Haider Defended Marginalised Communities Against Persecution
Jalila Haider, a Pakistani lawyer from the Hazara community, was awarded the prize for breaking barriers as the first female lawyer from her community and for challenging ethnic, state and patriarchal persecution. She has secured justice for thousands targeted or ignored by those in power, specifically ethnic, gender and religious minorities, as well as refugees.
The Right Livelihood jury said Haider was honoured 'for breaking barriers, as the first female lawyer from her Hazara community, to challenge ethnic, state and patriarchal persecution, guided by the conviction that no human being is illegal.' Her work continues to protect some of Pakistan's most vulnerable populations.
Rural Women's Assembly and Georgian Young Lawyers' Association Recognised for Civic Defiance
The Rural Women's Assembly, which brings together more than 178,000 small-scale farmers in 11 Southern African countries, was honoured for creating 'a united force defending land, seed and bodily autonomy against corporate and patriarchal dispossession.' The group has worked to reproduce and preserve local seed varieties to protect traditional practices of saving and exchanging seeds.
The Georgian Young Lawyers' Association (GYLA), founded in 1994, received the award for its efforts in 'building and safeguarding Georgian democracy and sustaining civic power in the face of an autocratic crackdown.' The Right Livelihood jury described the organisation as 'the moral compass of Georgian society.'
