At least 15 people have died after a passenger ferry capsized on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe on Tuesday amid bad weather, with rescue operations continuing as authorities work to account for all those on board.
Rescue Efforts Underway Amid Dangerous Conditions
Search and rescue operations were launched on Lake Kariba after the ferry overturned in strong winds and waves. Helicopters, boats and divers were deployed to the scene, but their arrival was reportedly delayed by the severe weather conditions.
Authorities confirmed that 77 people were rescued from the capsized vessel, while 15 bodies have been retrieved so far. Two funeral parlours have been engaged to collect the deceased, as the search continues for any remaining survivors.
Overloading Suspected as Key Factor in Disaster
The ferry has a registered capacity of 90 passengers and five crew members, yet ticketing receipts indicate that 114 adults were aboard at the time of the incident. There may also have been an unknown number of children below ticketing age on board, raising serious questions about safety compliance.
A witness reported that the boat departed in the morning under poor weather conditions and may have been struck by a large wave, which caused its engines to fail and led to the capsizing. The vessel operates between the northern town of Kariba and several islands and fishing camps on the lake.
Calls for Transparency from Local Officials
Mutsa Murombedzi, a local member of parliament, shared footage on X showing the boat at the start of its journey and called for officials to release the correct number of passengers on board. She stated that the community deserves honest answers regarding the incident.
Police have said that more details will be released in due course, but the discrepancy between the official passenger count and ticket sales has drawn public concern. Lake Kariba, which straddles the border with Zambia, is one of the world's largest man-made reservoirs.
