Residents of Samburu County in northern Kenya have recounted the harrowing moments surrounding a safari helicopter crash that killed all seven people on board, including five Americans, on Wednesday morning.
The Crash and Its Victims
A safari helicopter operated by Lady Lori Helicopters crashed in a remote area of Samburu County on Wednesday morning, killing all seven people on board, including five Americans and two other individuals. The aircraft, a Eurocopter EC130 B4, was flying a charter flight from the Loisaba Conservancy to the Ewaso Nyiro area in Samburu County.
The helicopter came down in a rugged area in the foothills of Mount Ololokwe, a popular tourist destination in the country. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority confirmed the details of the flight and the crash site, while the US State Department confirmed the nationality of the victims.
Eyewitness Accounts and Rescue Efforts
Jaycob Lekoriani, an eyewitness, described the incident from the start, saying, 'I witnessed this incident from the start. From when the chopper went down from the top of the hill, to when it tumbled down up to here.' He added that he and others rushed from the village to the crash site but arrived too late to save the passengers.
Tropic Air Kenya, a local safari operator, dispatched two of its helicopters to aid search and rescue operations following the crash. Despite the swift response, all seven people on board the Lady Lori Helicopters aircraft were killed in the accident.
Investigation and Broader Context
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with officials stating that the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority is examining the circumstances surrounding the accident. The aviation authority is working to determine whether mechanical failure, pilot error, or other factors contributed to the tragedy.
Helicopter crashes have been happening with increasing regularity in Kenya, which has a vibrant tourism industry that depends on domestic carriers to ferry visitors to distant places like Mount Ololokwe. In February, a legislator was among six people who died after a helicopter crash in a hilly area of western Kenya.
