Foreign Minister Wadephul concludes Abuja talks with focus on IT, raw materials and security
Germany's foreign minister Johann Wadephul wrapped up a two-day visit to Nigeria on Wednesday and called for strengthening trade and investment with his counterpart Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu in Abuja. Bilateral trade between the two countries grew by around 10 percent last year.
Economic partnership potential highlighted
Wadephul, on his third trip to Africa this year, said the potential of the economic partnership with Nigeria is far from exhausted, particularly in information technology and the vibrant start-up sector. He named critical raw materials, renewable energy and the pharmaceutical industry as areas for potential growth.
President Bola Tinubu has engaged in reforms including liberalising the naira exchange rate, overhauling the tax code and removing a fuel subsidy. These changes sparked domestic frustrations after causing crushing inflation in the short term, even as economists and investors welcomed them.
Security and regional stability concerns
Wadephul commended Nigeria for standing on the front line in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism. Nigeria has fought a jihadist insurgency in its northeast since 2009, and he warned of a spillover of fighting from insurgencies in the neighbouring Sahel.
The German delegation stopped in Mauritania on Monday. Claudia Roth said the country desperately needs humanitarian aid due to hundreds of thousands of refugees from Mali because the Sahel situation is dangerous. She confirmed such aid remains on the agenda.
Partnership framed as mutual learning
Claudia Roth, a Green party MP accompanying Wadephul, told AFP the world desperately needs new partners against political warlords. She said Europe is quite fragile and needs a strong partnership, and that Germany is not educating but learning from Africa.
Germany's foreign aid budget has been cut repeatedly, even as Wadephul promised continued cooperation. His three-country tour ends in South Africa on Thursday, following stops in Mauritania and Nigeria this week.
