Moroccan authorities arrested more than 100 migrants near the border town of Fnideq as they attempted to reach Ceuta, Spain's northernmost enclave. The operation followed a massive influx of approximately 78,000 migrants by sea earlier in the week, with 100 reportedly dying in the attempt. Security forces deployed tear gas and military assets to deter further crossings.
Mass Arrests and Deadly Sea Crossing
Security sources confirmed that 111 individuals were detained inside and around Fnideq, known as Castillejos in Spanish, located approximately 3km from the border. Most of the arrested migrants hailed from countries south of the Sahara, according to reports from Spanish and Reuters media outlets.
The arrests came after a harrowing sea crossing in which roughly 78,000 migrants arrived in Ceuta within hours. The mayor of Ceuta stated that 100 of those who attempted the crossing lost their lives, while the majority of survivors returned to Morocco.
Escalating Security Measures and Regional Response
Moroccan police, including officers in riot gear, used tear gas against groups of migrants gathered on nearby hills. The border security was described as '10 times stronger than the day before' by El País, with Spain deploying over 1,500 security officers to the region.
Spain had previously installed a steel fence and sea barrier after last month's migrant influx. Reports circulated on social media suggesting a second large-scale crossing attempt could occur by the end of the week, prompting the Moroccan government to warn it would prosecute organizers and participants.
EU Diplomatic Friction Over Ceuta
Italy temporarily suspended Spain's Schengen membership and began checking borders of people entering Spain, with Finland and Denmark supporting the move while the Czech Republic called for Spain's temporary exclusion from the Schengen agreement.
Spain responded angrily, with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stating Ceuta is not part of the Schengen area and migrants who entered there had not reached mainland Spain. Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed concern about a 'new wave of migrants heading towards Ceuta,' stating, 'We are not engaging in any kind of war against Spain; we are only monitoring people entering with caution.'
