Liberia has agreed to accept up to 1,200 third-country deportees from the United States, with the first batch of 20 expected to arrive within a year. The arrangement, announced by Liberia's Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah, is one of the largest such deals under the Trump administration's broader immigration crackdown.
The Agreement and Its Scope
Liberia's Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah confirmed that the deportees will include nationals from Africa, North America, South America, and the Caribbean. The first group of 20 individuals is scheduled to arrive on Thursday, with the full cohort of 1,200 to be received within a year.
Piah described the move as entirely humanitarian and consistent with Liberia's longstanding traditions. He added that the government intends to provide the transferred persons with the necessary support to seek protection in Liberia and to be safe during their stay.
Screening and Legal Concerns
Liberia's Justice Minister Natu Oswald Tweh said the country has screened the list of migrants ahead of their arrival. He stated that most of them are people who had immigration violations and offenses, though he did not specify whether any hold protection orders from U.S. immigration judges.
Under a series of often-secret agreements, the Trump administration has deported thousands of people to nearly two dozen countries, with about 10 of them in Africa. A key issue is that some of these deportees may have protection orders not to be returned to their home countries due to safety concerns.
Broader Context and Criticism
Immigration lawyers have said the Trump administration uses deportations to third countries as a legal loophole to indirectly force asylum seekers back to their home countries. In many cases, migrants are deported to countries they've never been to or where they face safety risks.
Liberia will receive support from the U.S. to manage the program and strengthen its migration system. The government has not disclosed whether the deportees expected in Liberia have protection orders, leaving questions about their legal status and potential risks.
