The Indomitable Lionesses secured their maiden Women's Africa Cup of Nations trophy on Sunday, defeating tournament debutant Malawi 3-0 in a final that marked Cameroon's first triumph at the competition after four attempts.
Dominant Display Seals Historic Triumph
Malawi started the match with promise, but Cameroon struck a decisive blow in the 21st minute when Marie Ngah Manga headed the opener from close range, with Samuel Eto'o forcing a save from Malawi goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo before the goal. The Lionesses then extended their lead when Naomi Eto produced a brilliant goal with her back to goal, turning to send the ball inside the right post.
Ngah Manga sealed the victory with her second goal and fifth of the tournament on a break when Eto reached the ball before Sikelo and delivered a perfect cross for her teammate to head home. Cameroon substitutes then rushed onto the pitch to celebrate with their teammates as the match concluded.
Malawi's Chawinga Sisters Fight Back in Vain
The Chawinga sisters pushed Malawi after the break, with Tabitha Chawinga feeling she should have been awarded a penalty, though a VAR check ruled otherwise. She then drew a good save from Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina, and her sister Temwa Chawinga went close from the rebound, but could not find an equaliser.
Despite their efforts, Malawi failed to muster a response to Cameroon's dominance and the Chawinga sisters could not overcome the Lionesses' defensive organisation and clinical finishing in the second half.
A Long Road to the Podium
This victory was particularly sweet for Cameroon, who had lost their last three final appearances – all to 10-time winner Nigeria – and had failed to qualify for the previous edition of the tournament. The Indomitable Lionesses finally broke through at the fourth attempt to claim their first Women's AFCON title.
The match was attended by FIFA president Gianni Infantino and CAF President Patrice Motsepe, who witnessed the historic moment as Cameroon's footballing legacy was cemented on the continental stage.
