Between 1 and 15 August 2026, the UNHCR registered 2,373 new Sudanese refugees in Chad's Ouaddaï, Wadi Fira, and Ennedi Est provinces, pushing the total number of Sudanese refugees hosted since April 2023 beyond 941,700.
Massive Relocation Efforts Continue Despite Shelter Shortages
During the reporting period, 2,851 Sudanese refugees, including 561 persons with specific needs, were relocated to the Arkoum site in eastern Chad. Since April 2026, 33,900 refugees have been transferred to safer reception sites, bringing the total number of relocations to over 651,800 since the start of the Sudan crisis.
However, the response faces significant challenges, including a deficit of 3,200 shelters and 12,658 refugees awaiting relocation at Oure-Cassoni. The UNHCR has supported the construction of 10,542 emergency shelters for new arrivals while continuing pre-registration and documentation activities.
Cholera Outbreak Triggers Emergency Vaccination Campaign
In response to a resurgence of cholera cases, particularly after new cases were reported in Lac province on 8 August, a rapid response team was deployed to Haïrom and cross-border surveillance mechanisms were strengthened. More than 700,000 people were vaccinated against cholera, with an additional 160,922 people targeted in the most exposed areas.
The Chadian government, with partner support, intensified prevention and response efforts to limit the risk of spread. These measures reflect the ongoing health challenges faced by both refugees and host communities in the region.
Cash Assistance and Environmental Initiatives Boost Resilience
Under the Mastercard Foundation project, 892 refugees and host community members received cash assistance in southern Chad, representing 81% of the 1,099 targeted persons. A total of 102.5 million FCFA was distributed to support agricultural activities and small livestock restocking, benefiting eight cooperatives.
Between 22 and 25 July, reforestation, environmental awareness, and community consultation activities mobilized refugees and host communities, supported by the provision of 48,000 seedlings. These initiatives contribute to climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable solutions for displaced populations.
