Court finds former Migori county governor and two associates guilty of arranging the 2018 killing that drew national attention to violence against women
Former Kenyan county governor Okoth Obado has been found guilty of murdering a pregnant 26-year-old university student with whom he had been having an affair. Obado and two co-accused were convicted on Thursday of arranging the killing. The victim's death highlighted violence against women.
Court ruling and convictions
Judge Cecilia Githua, reading a ruling broadcast live on television, said Obado "orchestrated a plot to eliminate Otieno" and "supplied motive, instigation and funds to finance the criminal enterprise". The former Migori governor's aide Michael Oyamo and clerk Caspal Obiero were also convicted for their roles.
The three are now in custody ahead of sentencing. A lawyer for the victim's family said: "We are happy with the conviction. We believe that justice has at last been served to Sharon". The court rejected Obado's 2018 denial of involvement in the murder.
Abduction and investigation
In 2018, Sharon Otieno's bloodied body was found dumped in a thicket outside a small town in western Kenya. Journalist Barack Oduor said she contacted him about her affair with the then-governor; they met, were kidnapped, and he escaped the car.
Otieno's body showed possible rape and stab wounds to neck, abdomen and back. Oduor's account aided police, who traced the abductors' vehicle whose tracker was disabled then reactivated. Prosecutor Noodin Haji cited the pregnancy the governor was unhappy about.
Trial and national context
During the trial, prosecutors called 42 witnesses and relied on circumstantial evidence to show the ex-governor and co-accused worked together, Kenya's Star reported. The case drew protests and underscored the scale of violence against women in the country.
A 2022 national survey found at least 34% of women said they had experienced physical violence. The conviction arrives amid continuing public concern over safety of women and accountability for prominent figures in Kenya.
