More than 100 people have been killed after a low-tech artisanal gold mine collapsed in the village of Zamboye in western Central African Republic on Tuesday afternoon, with the death toll expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.
Collapse and Casualties
The disaster struck in the Nana-Mambere prefecture, approximately 50km from the town of Baboua and near the border with Cameroon. Footage captured on social media showed a wall of dirt flowing down the rocky terrain, burying miners and onlookers alike.
Authorities have recovered more than 100 bodies from the site, though the exact number of people present at the time of the cave-in remains unknown. The incident is believed to have been triggered by the collapse of several underground tunnels where miners were operating.
Rescue Efforts and Investigation
Heavy machinery, including tractors, has been deployed to retrieve bodies and search for survivors, though officials warn the equipment could jeopardise the rescue of those still trapped under the rubble. A local youth council member described the situation as catastrophic, saying finding survivors alive would be a miracle.
An investigation has been opened to determine the cause of the collapse, identify the victims and establish any potential criminal liability. Cameroon's Eastern region authorities have confirmed that at least three of its citizens have been identified among the victims.
Wider Context of Mining Disasters
The Zamboye tragedy is the latest in a series of mining incidents in CAR this year, with at least 40 deaths recorded across multiple sites. Small-scale artisanal mines are widespread across Africa, often operating with weak safety standards despite regulations that criminalise their existence.
Unemployment continues to drive able-bodied men and women to abandoned or unused mines to eke out a living, putting them at constant risk. The miners involved in the Zamboye collapse were believed to be nationals of both CAR and Cameroon.
